Brand Before AI Visibility

Do you know if your brand is ready for AI to describe it?

Narrative & Numbers masthead: the Spotted Pony PR horse mark in cobalt above an eye with a segmented iris.
  • Your brand is being described without you. AI interprets it from whatever it can find, including outdated profiles and old press releases, and the decisions get made before you are ever in the room.
  • Brand Engine Optimization (BEO). The philosophy of protecting how a brand is interpreted across every engine that reads it, whether search, answers, or AI, so that what the world sees stays recognizably, defensibly yours.
  • BEO belongs upstream. It has been treated as a downstream job that tunes the brand to fit each new technology. Moved ahead of the technology, the strategy adjusts to the brand instead of the other way around.
  • Brand has been hard to fund because it has been hard to measure. Gartner found 84% of companies caught in a “brand doom loop” underinvest in brand measurement, distrust the results, fund it even less next time.
  • Seven dimensions, seven questions. Seen. Perceived. Obvious. Trusted. Talked About. Embedded. Differentiated. Ask each about the brand you intend, then about the brand the world already believes. The distance between the two is the work, and it is the same space AI fills in when it has nothing better to read.

Your brand is much more than your style guide. It is everything the world uses to recognize you and make decisions about your organization including outdated profiles and old press releases. It is one of your most valuable assets and one of the most overlooked.

Now AI is interpreting your brand without bringing your audience to your website. Decisions are being made without you in the room. Your brand was left unattended and now appears like a half-finished project being livestreamed to the world and left for AI to describe and review. You’re unaware of any misrepresentation until lost revenue shows up in the numbers.

The lack of measurement and external architecture was part of the reason I decided to create a new framework that names seven dimensions of brand trust that can no longer be ignored. Behind that framework is the philosophy that your brand should be optimized well before any algorithm, AI or otherwise.

BEO

Brand Engine Optimization (BEO) is the lesser-known cousin of SEO, AEO, and GEO. It is the philosophy of protecting how a brand is interpreted across every engine that reads it, whether search, answers, or AI, so that what the world sees stays recognizably, defensibly yours.

BEO has traditionally been a downstream function that optimizes your brand for the technology. It needs to be moved upstream, way ahead of any technology or trend so you can adjust the strategy to the brand, not the other way around.

Historically, brand has been hard to invest in because the return was hard to measure. Gartner's marketing survey1 found that 84% of companies are caught in what it calls a “brand doom loop.” They underinvest in brand measurement, they lack confidence in the results they get, and so the measurement attracts even less funding next time.

Gartner also predicts “that by 2028, over 80% of companies will make significant changes to their company’s identity, such as mission, brand and culture, to keep pace with the impact of AI on markets.”1

The arrival of AI is making brand a more valuable and necessary growth lever for organizations to be distinctive, credible, and trusted. AI also makes new methods of brand measurement possible and necessary. BEO protects your brand and the trust attached to it from the systems you don’t control.

Your brand engine is everything from your products to your customer experience and promises. It is the foundation of the trust you earn from customers. When optimized, the engine runs as a well-maintained system that supports your investments. Would you throw a house party in an unfinished house with exposed wires and no running water? Probably not. Then why invest in expensive campaigns and technologies if your organization’s brand is not consistent, credible, and well communicated?

SPOTTED

BEO is the philosophy. The SPOTTED Brand Trust System (SPOTTED) is the instrument that drives optimization and gives you measurable brand trust goals. Investments are more secure when you know how you want to be seen, what the world believes about your organization, and the gaps between. The seven dimensions of SPOTTED explore the questions you need to answer to optimize your brand.

Where are you Seen? How are you Perceived? Is your messaging Obvious? Are you Trusted? How are you Talked About? Are you Embedded in your communities? How are you Differentiated from your competitors?

The seven dimensions of brand trust. S, Seen: visibility, discoverability and channel credibility. P, Perceived: reputation and trust signals. O, Obvious: clarity and value communication. T, Trusted: credibility, safety and confidence. T, Talked About: reputation in the wild. E, Embedded: community trust and ecosystem depth. D, Differentiated: positioning, identity and ownable trust. Know. Act. Protect.

First, ask these questions about how you want your brand to be known, then ask what the world already believes. Honest answers will reveal gaps. Those gaps are what you need to correct in order to optimize your brand before any algorithm, AI, or trend. Those same gaps are what leave you vulnerable to AI hallucination as it tries to fill in holes when answering questions about your organization.

S - Seen. Being found and recognized as the same organization everywhere you are found.

P - Perceived. What people believe about you before they ever make contact.

O - Obvious. Whether people recognize their own problem in your language, immediately.

T - Trusted. Whether what a customer receives matches what you promised, including in hard conditions.

T - Talked About. What people say when nobody is asking.

E - Embedded. Whether you are a committed part of the communities you work and live in.

D - Differentiated. A position no competitor holds the same way.

From your style guide and through SPOTTED, your brand needs to be coherent and congruent. Know how you want to be seen and make sure that’s what the world sees. Optimizing your brand amplifies the value of your organization, protects it from being misrepresented, and is an untapped growth driver.

SPOTTED is a robust system that can look overwhelming for a team member or business owner to take on manually. So, I decided to turn it into an app to automate the parts that make sense and keep the rest human. The SPOTTED Brand Trust System application launches October 28, 2026. I am looking for a small demo cohort to be the first to try it and get in on the founder’s offer. Learn more at www.spottedbrand.com or message me if you have questions.

Head up. Heels down.
